PolyU Study Finds Room Attribute Preferences Vital to Hotel Profit Maximisation

Hotel managers need to understand the value that customers place on particular room features and charge for them accordingly, argue Dr Lorenzo Masiero of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and his co-researchers in a recently published study. Having conducted a stated-choice experiment in a Hong Kong hotel, the researchers find that customers are willing to pay much more than currently charged for features such as a harbour view, but place relatively little value on other features such as free cancellation. Hotels would benefit from segmenting their markets to reflect these discrepancies, the researchers suggest, with the ultimate aim ofmaximising profits.

Tamara Myers thought that her hotel bill at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino would come to $415. At least that's what Otel.com, the website through which she booked the room, promised her. But the site glossed over a small detail: a mandatory daily \"resort fee\" payable at checkout, which added $306 to the folio. Gotcha. \"I did my due diligence,\" insists Myers, who lives in Indianapolis and works for the military. She'd made the reservation for her 88-year-old mother, who was caring for her brother in Las Vegas. \"The fee was listed nowhere on Otel.com.\" Mandatory resort fees, tacked onto a hotel bill after an initial price quote - and sometimes even later, as with Myers - are on the rise again. A total of 1,026 domestic hotels charged a resort fee for the first half of 2017, a 14 percent increase from just six months ago, according to new research from Resortfeechecker.com, a site that allows travelers to look up resort fees at hotels worldwide. The average resort fee, which covers everything from \"free\" WiFi to access to exercise facilities, now stands at almost $21, a jump of 8.7 percent from last December.

Strength in Global Economy Means Higher Travel Pricing in 2018

According to the 2018 Global Travel Forecast, travel prices are expected to rise sharply in the coming year, reaching nearly 4 percent increases in some sectors. Released today, the fourth annual forecast, by the GBTA Foundation in partnership with Carlson Wagonlit Travel, and with the support of the Carlson Family Foundation, shows global airfares are expected to rise 3.5 percent in 2018; hotel prices are expected to be 3.7 percent higher; and ground transportation such as taxis, trains and buses are expected to rise only 0.6 percent significantly less than the 3 percent inflation forecast for 2018.

The lowest hotel rate tough to find, but OTAs a good bet - travelweekly.com

Where's the lowest hotel rate? Online shoppers may have to do a lot of research to find it, a Piper Jaffray study indicates. And when they do find it, OTAs and travel search sites will have the lowest rate more often than hotel supplier sites. Piper Jaffray surveyed 1,000 U.S. customers who reserved rooms at 86 chain hotels in the world's largest 25 cities. It found that OTAs and travel search sites had the lowest price 21% of the time, while hotel supplier websites had it 13% of the time. In about two-thirds of the cases, room pricing was the same across distribution channels.

U.S. Hotel Spas - A Great Source of Revenue

New York -- In 2015, hotel spa department revenue grew at a faster pace compared to other sources of hotel revenue. According to the recently released 2016 edition of Trends in the Hotel Spa Industry, U.S. hotel spa departments were able to increase their revenue by 5.6 percent from 2014 to 2015. This compares favorably to a 3.3 percent rise in rooms revenue for the properties in the survey sample, and a 5.5 percent increase in total hotel revenue. This is the first time since the 2007 edition of the publication that spa revenue growth surpassed rooms revenue growth.

STR: US hotel performance for October 2016

The U.S. hotel industry reported mostly positive year-over-year results in the three key performance metrics during October 2016, according to data from STR.Compared with October 2015, the U.S. hotel industry's occupancy was nearly flat, down 0.3% to 68.6%. However, average daily rate (ADR) increased 1.9% to US$126.73, and revenue per available room (RevPAR) grew 1.6% to US$86.94. October marked the industry's 80th consecutive month with a year-over-year increase in RevPAR.\"October produced the lowest RevPAR growth figure of any month since February of 2010,\" said Jan Freitag, STR's senior VP for lodging insights. \"Opposite of last month, we expected results to be fairly weak with the Jewish holiday calendar shift (September 2015 to October 2016) having a pretty significant impact on Group demand. Halloween on a Monday instead of a Saturday (2015) also hurt performance.\"Another important item to note is supply growth. The 1.7% increase in rooms available was the highest since June 2010. Supply and demand each grew 1.5% through the first 10 months of the year, and while that will likely be the case through the end of the year, we are forecasting supply to pull ahead in 2017 and place further pressure on hoteliers' pricing power.\"Among the Top 25 Markets, Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Virginia, registered the only double-digit increases in occupancy (+11.7% to 60.4%) and RevPAR (+14.8% to US$52.43). ADR in the market grew 2.8% year over year to US$86.79.Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota-Wisconsin, posted the largest rise in ADR (+8.3% to US$131.65) and ranked second in RevPAR growth (+7.6% to US$99.61).Houston, Texas, reported the steepest declines across the three key performance metrics. Occupancy in the market dropped 12.8% to 63.2%, ADR was down 7.4% to US$104.69 and RevPAR fell 19.2% to US$66.17.Miami/Hialeah, Florida, was the only other Top 25 Market to experience a double-digit decrease in any of the metrics. RevPAR in the market dropped 12.6% to US$106.92, driven primarily by an 8.4% decline in occupancy to 67.2%.\"The Top 25 Markets (RevPAR: -0.4%) lagged behind the performance of all other markets (RevPAR: +3.0%),\" Freitag said. \"That is not a surprise given that a significant portion of the country's supply growth is happening in the major markets.\"

London hotel prices drop by 16% this month

Hotel prices have fallen in major cities across the UK this month, according to the trivago Hotel Price Index (tHPI), recorded monthly by hotel search websitetrivago.co.uk. In comparison to July, London hotel prices have dropped by 16 per cent, from an average of 171 in July to an average of 143 during August. The only exception is Edinburgh, which hosted the International and Fringe festivals this month and subsequently saw a 35 per cent increase in hotel prices, from 150 per night in July to 202 in August.

Dominant online platforms gaining market share in travel trade, no signs of increased competition between online travel agents unveils European hotel distribution study

HOTREC, the European trade association of hotels, restaurants and cafes, unveils the results of its second hotel distribution study, based on responses from over 2000 hoteliers. The results show an increasing dependency of hotels on Online Travel Agents (OTAs), as nearly one out of four overnights was generated through this channel in 2015. With regard to the OTA market, it is clear that 3 big OTAs are dominating with a common market share of 92%. The most dominant player is the Priceline Group (Booking.com) with a share of over 60%. Over the last few months, hotels have not experienced increased competition between OTAs, which was one of the expectations linked to the introduction of the so called 'narrow parity clauses'. The vast majority of them reported not having experienced any decrease of commission rates to the OTAs.

Recharge, a year-old, San Francisco-based company whose app enables users to book a stay in a hotel for just 67 cents a minute, or $40 an hour, has closed on $2.3 million in seed funding. US online hotel room rates edge up 1.5% from a year ago this May

Hotel room rates in the top-25 most popular U.S. destinations are averaging $216.25 this May, up from $213.85 in April, according to trivago hotel price indices (tHPI) released today. The U.S. online average daily rate (oADR), the industry's best analytic for competitive pricing, currently ranges among the top-25 destinations from a high of $380 to a low of $123 this May. Based on industry surveys, eforecasting.com estimates that in 2016 about 65% of all reservations are made online via brand websites and travel agent merchant websites, compared with only one-fourth eight years ago.

STR: U.S. summer forecast calls for record hotel demand, low room rate growth

The U.S. hotel industry is projected to experience record-breaking room demand but low room rate growth during June through August 2016, according to summer forecast figures from STR.The number of rooms sold during the summer months will increase year over year by roughly 2.1%. That growth will follow the current trend of record- breaking demand performance in the U.S.However, a healthy supply pipeline that will likely lead to a 1.7% increase in the number of rooms available is expected to keep occupancy growth muted at 0.4%.Additionally, hoteliers are not expected to increase prices at the same level as 2015. \"Average-daily-rate growth, while still positive, is certainly not as strong as we first expected,\" said Jan Freitag, STR's senior VP for lodging insights. \"The ADR forecast for the summer currently stands at around +4%. We expect that muted macroeconomic growth will have a small, positive impact on employment and corporate profit numbers. With that growth should be the desire for the American public to travel and for managers to send their people on the road.\"Freitag also noted that revenue-per- available-room growth was moderate in August 2015 (+1.8%), thus creating the opportunity for August 2016 to be comparatively stronger. Overall, STR projects RevPAR to grow roughly 4.4% this summer.STR's revised 2016/2017 U.S. Forecast will be released on 6 June at the NYU International Hospitality Industry Investment Conference.

The industry wised up quickly and began asking for rate parity where the OTAs were not allowed to undersell the hotels and vice versa.
