What Spooked the U.S. Leisure Traveler?

The U.S. leisure travel population fell to 145 million in 2016, decreasing for the first time since 2011. The decline came a year after leisure travel incidence surpassed the pre-recession peak for the first time to hit a new high of 72%. But instead of maintaining their confident outlook, U.S. consumers pulled back on travel, with just two thirds of Americans taking a leisure trip. Chicago, Orlando and Washington, D.C. are the top North American markets in the meeting planners' consideration set, according to STR's 2017 DestinationMAP (Meeting Assessment Program).DestinationMAP is a comprehensive study of meeting planners and the meetings market in North America. Now in its 17th edition, the report surveys meeting planners' preferences and their perceptions of 40 North American markets.Following Chicago (67%), Orlando (67%) and Washington, D.C. Business Travel Responsible for $547 Billion in U.S. GDP in 2016, Creates Over 7.4 Million Jobs

A new report issued today at GBTA Convention 2017 by the GBTA Foundation, the education and research arm of the Global Business Travel Association, in partnership with American Express Global Business Travel (GBT), highlights the positive economic impact business travel has on the nation's economy. The study, titled 'The U.S. Business Travel Economic Impact Report,' reveals business travel was responsible for about 3 percent ($547 billion) of U.S. GDP in 2016. Additionally, the research found that for every 1 percent change in business travel spending, the U.S. economy gains or loses 74,000 jobs, $5.5 billion in GDP, $3.3 billion in wages and $1.3 billion in taxes.

PolyU Study Finds More Knowledge Needed of Muslim Tourists' Requirements

Although Muslim tourists constitute a large and growing sector of the travel market, greater awareness is needed of their specific requirements according to Ph.D. student Ms Hera Oktadiana and Dean Kaye Chon of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and a co-researcher. In a recently published review paper, the researchers highlight that some aspects of compliance with Islamic teaching are well known, such as the need for Halal food and the non-consumption of alcohol. Yet, they argue, more attention must be paid to other areas such as the role of travel for well-being in Islamic life and supporting Islamic religious and cultural events, among others.

Record Number Of Foreign Tourists Thanks To Brazilian Olympics | tourism-review.com

South American visitors accounted for the largest share of foreign tourists who visited Brazil in 2016. This conclusion was presented by the Statistical Yearbook of the Ministry of Tourism. According to the survey, 6.6 million visitors came to Brazil from abroad in 2016, which is a historical record, representing a growth of 4.3% compared to 2015. Out of them, 3.7 million flew from the neighbouring countries. The spotlight goes to Argentina, the source market for 2.3 million visitors, a growth of 10% compared to 2015. In 2016, Brazil hosted the Olympic and Paralympic games, which was the main reason for the record data. Chinese Tourists Spend More In Germany | tourism-review.com

Chinese tourists in Germany spend on average 513 euros per day in Munich, which is more than the Arab visitors (367 euros), according to a recent survey by the Bavarian Trade Association. Visitors from China do not look for luxury goods only, but also cover medium-sized shops and department stores. Italian Tourism Destinations Popular Especially Among Europeans | tourism-review.com

A recent survey by the Bank of Italy on Italian tourism revealed that 2016 was a successful year compared to 2015. Italian travelers went abroad in greater numbers 64.6 million (in 2015 it was 62.8 million people). In terms of foreign inflow there was an increase as well reaching 82.9 million visitors compared to 81.6 million people in 2015. Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) State of the Industry Report 2016 - dissection

Overview:I am going to discuss, in greater detail, the Caribbean tourism performance in 2016 and what to expect in 2017. 2016 marked another record-setting year as for the first time in our history we received over 29 million arrivals. This is also the 7th consecutive year of growth and our estimated 4.2% increase in tourism trips is the 3rd consecutive year above the global growth rate. Moreover, the average annual growth rate over the last 7 years slightly exceeded the average annual global growth rate of international trips. The performance in 2016 was primarily supported by sustained economic growth in the US, our main source market, and relatively low oil prices. Following an increase in the Caribbean market share of global visits in 2015, rising by 0.1 percentage points, it remained steady at 2.4% in 2016. Nevertheless, negative events such as a weak Canadian dollar and the most active hurricane season since 2012, especially in October, no doubt contributed to preventing our region from reaching the coveted target of 30 million arrivals. Among the destinations, tourist arrivals showed uneven growth. Of the 28 destinations reporting data for varying periods between January and December, 22 recorded increases ranging from quite modest to a robust 17.5% (the Turks & Caicos Islands), while the remaining six destinations experienced declines. Besides Turks and Caicos Islands, 4 countries, Belize, Cuba, Guyana, and Bermuda reported double digit growth rates. The contributing factors to these performances included greater air access from the source markets to the region and the realization of significant investments to enhance infrastructure (airport redevelopment) and product (hotels). With the exception of the Dutch Caribbean[1] (-5.6%), the major Caribbean sub-regions reported healthy growth. The Other Caribbean[2] countries' market, which accounts for almost half of all arrivals to the region, recorded the fastest growth rate (7.4%) in 2016. The Commonwealth Caribbean[3] and French Caribbean[4] grew by 4.1% and 4.2%, respectively. Market TrendsA further look into the performance of our major source markets reveals that demand for Caribbean vacations rose in all of them, except Canada, which fell by 3.4%. A weak currency and sluggish first half economic output contributed to the decline in Canadian trips to the Caribbean. More than 70% of the reporting destinations reported decreases in arrivals from this market. Consequently, Canadian market share fell to 11.3%. There were over 14.6 million U.S. visits to the region, 3.5% more than the previous year. This performance was attributed to solid economic growth, low unemployment rate and high consumer confidence in the US. In particular, seven destinations recorded double-digit increases within their reporting periods. This group includes Belize, the Turks & Caicos Islands, Bermuda, Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Grenada and Montserrat, while declines were recorded in six destinations. Arrivals from the European market totaled 5.6 million and improved by an estimated 11.4%, the strongest growth among the main markets, in spite of terrorist attacks in some countries, the Brexit referendum and mixed economic outcomes across continental Europe. In total, 72% of the reporting destinations registered increases in arrivals from this market. The top performing destinations, which registered double-digit increases, were the Turks & Caicos Islands, St. Maarten, Guyana and Anguilla. Caribbean intra-regional travel broke another record in 2016, as arrivals rose by 3.6% to register just over 1.7 million trips, the second consecutive year of growth. Robust double-digit growth was experienced in Guyana, St. Vincent & the Grenadines and the Turks & Caicos Islands. The region received about 11% fewer tourist arrivals from South America in 2016 compared to 2015. Hotel TrendsThe improvement in arrivals to the Caribbean was not reflected in improved hotel performance. According to Smith Travel Research[5], the primary revenue metrics were slightly down. The average daily rate (ADR) fell by less than a dollar to US$ 201.50 and revenue per available room contracted by 2.6% to US$ 134.48 while occupancy fell by 1.6 percentage points to 66.7%. This outcome reflects the rise of the sharing economy and additional hotel room stock. However, it is important to note that the hotel revenue indicators are still above the performances recorded between 2012 and 2014. Cruise Trends2016 was also a record breaking year for Caribbean cruising, as, cruise passenger arrivals to the region grew by about 1.3% to reach 26.3 million, in line with expectations at the beginning of 2016. Larger ships, port enhancements and new destinations on the Caribbean cruise itineraries helped to increase the attractiveness of Caribbean cruise holidays. Overall, only 48% of the reporting destinations registered growth with the best performances occurring in the Dominican Republic, the British Virgin Islands and Grenada, which all grew by double digits, while Belize became the eighth destination to record over one million cruise passenger visits this year. In total, the Caribbean received 33.7% of all cruise deployments in 2016. Visitor expenditureConsistent with increases in stay-over and cruise visits, total visitor expenditure is estimated to have increased by approximately 3.5% to reach US$35.5 billion. Outlook2016 saw the election of a new Republican Administration in the United States and the success of a referendum which mandates that the United Kingdom withdraw from the European Union. Both these events raise the level of global uncertainty, which could impact the performance of tourism in 2017 and beyond. Cuba was the destination that offered the greatest growth potential. However, at the end of 2016, several US-based airlines, citing reduced demand, announced they were cutting some of the promised capacity for 2017 to the destination. Altogether, we expect that tourist arrivals to the region will grow at a slower rate of between 2.5 and 3.5% in 2017. Further expansion of the cruise industry is expected in 2017, as 26 new vessels with a combined capacity of over 30 thousand passengers are expected to sail from the shipyards. The anticipated rise in cruise passenger arrivals to the region is projected to be between 1.5% and 2.5%.

Airbnb Usage Is Increasing Among Corporate Travelers | businesstravelnews.com

More employers and organizations are using Airbnb, according to Concur analysis of a subset of its clients. From the second quarter of 2015 and the second quarter of 2016, the number of companies for which a traveler expensed an Airbnb lodging increased 32 percent. Greek tourism: Last-minute international arrivals jumped 9.1% in July, says SETE

July saw an increase in last-minute international tourist arrivals in airports and roads, Greece's largest tourism body SETE said on Wednesday. According to the association, airports nationwide recorded a 9.1 percent rise (about 276,000) in arrivals last month, while 1.6 percent more tourists (about 30,000) arrived by car, compared with the same month in 2015.

Global Business Travel Spend Topped Record-Breaking $1.2 Trillion USD in 2015, Will Reach $1.6 Trillion by 2020

Global business travel spend topped $1.2 trillion USD in 2015, growing 5 percent over 2014, and is forecast to reach 1.3 trillion in 2016 according to the GBTA BTI Outlook Annual Global Report & Forecast, a new report released today by the GBTA Foundation, the education and research arm of GBTA, and sponsored by Visa, Inc. Despite continued global uncertainty, cautious optimism rules the forecast, which predicts global business travel spend to advance 5.8 percent on average over the next five years reaching $1.6 trillion in 2020. \"Global business travel remains a critical driver of the success of organizations around the globe,\" said Michael W. McCormick, GBTA executive director and COO. \"Business travel has demonstrated a tremendous resiliency as it continues slow and steady progress even in the face of global uncertainty, a weakened global economy, terrorist attacks, world health issues and other obstacles. The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) and the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA), representing the region's public and private sector tourism interest, recognize and respect the will of the majority of voters as reflected in the outcome of the British EU referendum. The extent to which the decision by UK voters to opt out of the European Union will affect travel to and from our region remains to be seen. The severity and longevity of exchange rate fluctuations is an immediate concern. Caribbean tourism industry stakeholders should monitor this, given its potential impact on travel planning and travel package agreements. Concerns have been raised about the impact on travel visas, affecting UK-EU travel to and from the Caribbean. A resolution on this matter will take some time to address and prior to that the existing Schengen visa protocols remain in effect. The broader implications on travel demand and tour operator agreements, airline traffic and movement, international trade, as well as UK and EU financial and technical support to the region, in particular to its protectorates, are all yet to be determined and will take some time to resolve. CTO and CHTA are planning a detailed webinar briefing for their respective members titled Brexit and Caribbean Tourism: Possible Implications, for Thursday, July 7, 2016 at 10 a.m. Facilitators will include David Jessop, a consultant to the Caribbean Council and investigative journalist and columnist whose work is featured regularly throughout the Caribbean media; and Mark Tanzer, CEO for the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA).
