In a recently published review paper, the researchers highlight that some aspects of compliance with Islamic teaching are well known, such as the need for Halal food and the non-consumption of alcohol. Yet, they argue, more attention must be paid to other areas such as the role of travel for well-being in Islamic life and supporting Islamic religious and cultural events, among others.

French Tourism Industry Is Finally Growing | tourism-review.com

French tourism industry is finally celebrating. After two years, tourists are back in force in France. The strong rebound, that reaches the figures from before the attacks in 2015 and 2016, benefits mainly to the urban areas and in Ile-de-France, according to INSEE (French National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies). During the last three months of 2016, the amount of overnight stays showed an increase of 3.9% compared to the last quarter of 2015, after two consecutive quarters of decline, according to the Institute of Statistics. This strong rebound is more than offsetting the net decline recorded a year earlier (-1.8%) related to the impact of the attacks from January 2015.

Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) State of the Industry Report 2016 - dissection

Overview:I am going to discuss, in greater detail, the Caribbean tourism performance in 2016 and what to expect in 2017. 2016 marked another record-setting year as for the first time in our history we received over 29 million arrivals. This is also the 7th consecutive year of growth and our estimated 4.2% increase in tourism trips is the 3rd consecutive year above the global growth rate. Moreover, the average annual growth rate over the last 7 years slightly exceeded the average annual global growth rate of international trips. The performance in 2016 was primarily supported by sustained economic growth in the US, our main source market, and relatively low oil prices. Following an increase in the Caribbean market share of global visits in 2015, rising by 0.1 percentage points, it remained steady at 2.4% in 2016. Nevertheless, negative events such as a weak Canadian dollar and the most active hurricane season since 2012, especially in October, no doubt contributed to preventing our region from reaching the coveted target of 30 million arrivals. Among the destinations, tourist arrivals showed uneven growth. Of the 28 destinations reporting data for varying periods between January and December, 22 recorded increases ranging from quite modest to a robust 17.5% (the Turks & Caicos Islands), while the remaining six destinations experienced declines. Besides Turks and Caicos Islands, 4 countries, Belize, Cuba, Guyana, and Bermuda reported double digit growth rates. The contributing factors to these performances included greater air access from the source markets to the region and the realization of significant investments to enhance infrastructure (airport redevelopment) and product (hotels). With the exception of the Dutch Caribbean[1] (-5.6%), the major Caribbean sub-regions reported healthy growth. The Other Caribbean[2] countries' market, which accounts for almost half of all arrivals to the region, recorded the fastest growth rate (7.4%) in 2016. The Commonwealth Caribbean[3] and French Caribbean[4] grew by 4.1% and 4.2%, respectively. Market TrendsA further look into the performance of our major source markets reveals that demand for Caribbean vacations rose in all of them, except Canada, which fell by 3.4%. A weak currency and sluggish first half economic output contributed to the decline in Canadian trips to the Caribbean. More than 70% of the reporting destinations reported decreases in arrivals from this market. Consequently, Canadian market share fell to 11.3%. There were over 14.6 million U.S. visits to the region, 3.5% more than the previous year. This performance was attributed to solid economic growth, low unemployment rate and high consumer confidence in the US. In particular, seven destinations recorded double-digit increases within their reporting periods. This group includes Belize, the Turks & Caicos Islands, Bermuda, Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Grenada and Montserrat, while declines were recorded in six destinations. Arrivals from the European market totaled 5.6 million and improved by an estimated 11.4%, the strongest growth among the main markets, in spite of terrorist attacks in some countries, the Brexit referendum and mixed economic outcomes across continental Europe. In total, 72% of the reporting destinations registered increases in arrivals from this market. The top performing destinations, which registered double-digit increases, were the Turks & Caicos Islands, St. Maarten, Guyana and Anguilla. Caribbean intra-regional travel broke another record in 2016, as arrivals rose by 3.6% to register just over 1.7 million trips, the second consecutive year of growth. Robust double-digit growth was experienced in Guyana, St. Vincent & the Grenadines and the Turks & Caicos Islands. The region received about 11% fewer tourist arrivals from South America in 2016 compared to 2015. Hotel TrendsThe improvement in arrivals to the Caribbean was not reflected in improved hotel performance. According to Smith Travel Research[5], the primary revenue metrics were slightly down. The average daily rate (ADR) fell by less than a dollar to US$ 201.50 and revenue per available room contracted by 2.6% to US$ 134.48 while occupancy fell by 1.6 percentage points to 66.7%. This outcome reflects the rise of the sharing economy and additional hotel room stock. However, it is important to note that the hotel revenue indicators are still above the performances recorded between 2012 and 2014. Cruise Trends2016 was also a record breaking year for Caribbean cruising, as, cruise passenger arrivals to the region grew by about 1.3% to reach 26.3 million, in line with expectations at the beginning of 2016. Larger ships, port enhancements and new destinations on the Caribbean cruise itineraries helped to increase the attractiveness of Caribbean cruise holidays. Overall, only 48% of the reporting destinations registered growth with the best performances occurring in the Dominican Republic, the British Virgin Islands and Grenada, which all grew by double digits, while Belize became the eighth destination to record over one million cruise passenger visits this year. In total, the Caribbean received 33.7% of all cruise deployments in 2016. Visitor expenditureConsistent with increases in stay-over and cruise visits, total visitor expenditure is estimated to have increased by approximately 3.5% to reach US$35.5 billion. Outlook2016 saw the election of a new Republican Administration in the United States and the success of a referendum which mandates that the United Kingdom withdraw from the European Union. Both these events raise the level of global uncertainty, which could impact the performance of tourism in 2017 and beyond. Cuba was the destination that offered the greatest growth potential. However, at the end of 2016, several US-based airlines, citing reduced demand, announced they were cutting some of the promised capacity for 2017 to the destination. Altogether, we expect that tourist arrivals to the region will grow at a slower rate of between 2.5 and 3.5% in 2017. Further expansion of the cruise industry is expected in 2017, as 26 new vessels with a combined capacity of over 30 thousand passengers are expected to sail from the shipyards. The anticipated rise in cruise passenger arrivals to the region is projected to be between 1.5% and 2.5%.

How MICE Demand Management Influences Your Hotels Revenue!

The days of flooding sales with fruitless leads are gone. Today, every hotel professional in the industry needs to know the bottom line revenue they're seeing, rather than just the number of leads the sales team responds to.The hotel industry is truly dependent on identifying profitable customers by their propensity to book venues. However, the enormous industry means meeting planners always have a plethora of venue options to choose from. To ease the RFP process, meeting planners prefer sending theirs online all at once. Without a streamlined way of managing this huge RFP demand, it's really difficult for hoteliers to prioritize and identify profitable proposals.Unfortunately, hoteliers spend far too much time and energy drafting proposals, and as a result, lose other opportunities in the pipeline. Most hoteliers need one useful platform that can take care of their MICE business needs - from generating demand to managing it. The need of the hour is a solution that can primarily address these top three pain points: Effectively Prioritizing RFPs There is a constant fear among hoteliers of missing out on business by not replying to RFPs quickly enough. Thankfully, solutions like Cvent's Group Demand Management can help prioritize and evaluate these RFPs. With the help of this simple yet effective scoring methodology, hotels and venues can evaluate any business lead and overcome the anxiety of losing profitable business.Sending Competitive BidsOn average, planners usually receive 12 to 15 proposal bids. So creating a winning quote is always a time-consuming task for the Hoteliers. The need in the industry is to get that one platform, that provides the intelligence hotels want in order to send market competitive bids and make informed business decisions.Managing Multiple ChannelsMore and more hotels have developed their websites that allow guests to book their property directly. However, these websites also offer huge business opportunities if deployed with a simple widget, which works as a hub and connects hoteliers with planners coming from different channels, all while keeping these demands centralized in one common platform.Opportunely, today the Industry has Cvent's Group Demand Management, which can take care of all this and much more, and offers a range of features that provide flexibility & enhanced efficiency to hoteliers.

Tourism In Venice Driving The Locals Out Of The City | tourism-review.com

Tourism in Venice has been a growing problem; the city is overrun by tourists. Many of the local inhabitants have left the center, and are still leaving in droves. Within one generation the population has shrunk by almost a third. Rising costs are driving more and more people out of the city. This month the number of inhabitants has fallen to under 55,000. In 1951 the population was 175,000. 26 years ago it was still 78,000. Another problem is that almost half of the population is over 60 years old. On the other there are only about 9000 people under 18 years old.

caribbean Tourism Organization, Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association Issue Statement On Brexit

The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) and the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA), representing the region's public and private sector tourism interest, recognize and respect the will of the majority of voters as reflected in the outcome of the British EU referendum. The extent to which the decision by UK voters to opt out of the European Union will affect travel to and from our region remains to be seen. The severity and longevity of exchange rate fluctuations is an immediate concern. Caribbean tourism industry stakeholders should monitor this, given its potential impact on travel planning and travel package agreements. Concerns have been raised about the impact on travel visas, affecting UK-EU travel to and from the Caribbean. A resolution on this matter will take some time to address and prior to that the existing Schengen visa protocols remain in effect. The broader implications on travel demand and tour operator agreements, airline traffic and movement, international trade, as well as UK and EU financial and technical support to the region, in particular to its protectorates, are all yet to be determined and will take some time to resolve. CTO and CHTA are planning a detailed webinar briefing for their respective members titled Brexit and Caribbean Tourism: Possible Implications, for Thursday, July 7, 2016 at 10 a.m. Facilitators will include David Jessop, a consultant to the Caribbean Council and investigative journalist and columnist whose work is featured regularly throughout the Caribbean media; and Mark Tanzer, CEO for the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA).

How Hotels Are Catering to Multigenerational Travelers | Skift.comThe words multigenerational and millennial have at least two things in common: They both begin with the letter M, and they are both key in defining the travel industry. Whereas the rise of millennials is dictating how travel will be transformed in the coming years, the multigenerational crowd is more a here and now group, showing continued growth with roots that date to the 1990s when industry players first noticed the travel patterns and habits of what was then a niche market. However, hotels trying to come up with ways to convert the group's needs into experiences that can be shared across generations is a more recent development.

Is the Occupy' Movement Changing Luxury Travel?

Increasing inequality in wealth is one of the factors changing the nature of luxury travel. Social and political forces such as the Occupy Movement and government austerity cuts are driving some of the rich to spend their wealth more privately. The same forces have also encouraged the rise in socially responsible luxury travel activities. The trend to private consumption away from public scrutiny can be seen in the increase in purchases of mega yachts and private islands. Technological change and its impact on workplace communications has also triggered a counter demand among the rich to de-tech completely while on holiday, said luxury travel expert Carolyn Childs. Addressing the Luxperience Thought Leaders seminar in Sydney yesterday (6 September), Childs told the audience of 500 high- end travel buyers, sellers and advisors that the 'occupy' movement, like the French and Russian Revolutions before it, had changed the psyche, moral reference points and consumption patterns of well-off people. \"We now see the rise of responsible resorts such as El Nido in the Philippines where high end travellers are both pampered and give back to the community,\" said Childs. \"Luxury travel is now increasingly defined by a rising commitment to people, planet and self-improvement as much as indulgence, pampering and conspicuous consumption.\" Childs told the audience that wealth disparity has been on the rise since around 1980, with the richest 1 to 10% in North America, Europe and Australia now owning over 70% of society's wealth. However, the rise in the nouveau riche, not least in China, India as well as G7 economies, has seen luxury consumers around the world splinter into personality types such as \"philanthropist\", \"dynast\", \"lotus eater\", \"hedonist\", \"pioneer\", \"jet setter\", \"enrichment seeker\" and \"replenisher.\" The luxury travel sector has also seen the rise of \"aspirational\" consumers who will splash the cash depending on three factors: the occasion (such as a honeymoon or anniversary), the experience (such as a trip to Antarctica), and the traveller's ability to trade up or down for example, enjoying a three-star holiday but taking a helicopter ride to a spectacular dinner on the last day. Luxury travellers now rely on elite travel agents, or advisors, that Childs called \"magicians\". \"These Gandalfs and Merlins are completely service-minded, very creative control freaks who try to anticipate the psychological and physical needs of their clients. They have to deliver magic. They dread saying 'no' to a customer who is only used to hearing 'yes'.\" When it goes wrong the results can be high profile. Childs cited the case of Johnny Depp's terriers Pistol and Boo who faced being put down when the actor brought them into Australia in defiance of quarantine regulations. In December, Childs, the co-founder of MyTravelResearch.com, will publish an in-depth study of trends and changes in the luxury travel economy in partnership with Luxperience, a luxury business exchange which takes place in Sydney, this week, September 6-9.

In terms of size, Airbnb already has overtaken the largest hotel companies. By comparison, as of the 2014 BTN Business Travel Survey, the largest hotel company measured by rooms, InterContinental Hotels Group, had a portfolio of about 687,000 rooms.

CWT and GBTA Release 2015 Global Travel Price Outlook Giving Companies Comprehensive Look at Year Ahead

Carlson Wagonlit Travel (CWT) today released a new joint 2015 Global Travel Price Outlook report with the GBTA Foundation, the education and research arm of the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA). The report gives an early indication of what businesses can expect in 2015, helping them plan ahead during the upcoming budgeting period. The report highlights that demand from emerging markets such as China, India and Brazil and improved economic growth in advanced economies, combined with limited advances in travel supply, will result in an upward pressure on rates, particularly in high-demand travel markets. The study shows that travel managers are prepared for this, however, with those surveyed by GBTA expecting airfares to increase most among all categories due to consolidation in major markets.\"With business travel prices on the rise, this study is the key to effective budgeting,\" said Christophe Renard, vice president, CWT Solutions Group. \"Working with the GBTA Foundation has allowed us to share best practice, industry knowledge and expertise to create a wide-ranging look at the year ahead.\"\"The study reveals that travel managers expect price increases next year across the board on travel categories including airfares, hotel room rates and rental car rates,\" said Joseph Bates, GBTA Foundation vice president of research. \"Risks to the forecast including the escalating Ukrainian crisis; declining European inflation; burgeoning debt in China and oil price shocks could potentially have a negative influence on travel demand and pricing however, so travel managers are advised to consider contingencies for these risks in their planning.\"The 2015 Global Travel Price Outlook is split by category: Air; hotel; ground; and meetings & events, making for easy comparison across regions.AirWith rising demand, favorable cost structures and slowly expanding capacity, airfares are expected to rise gradually through 2015, by as much as 2.2 percent, although low-cost carriers are limiting price increases in some regions.Latin America will see the highest price increases of any region advancing 3.5 percent, while price growth in Europe will be much more modest. Expect the growth in traffic among low-cost carriers to lead to diminished pricing power of many legacy carriers in Asia Pacific and North American air prices to be driven by airline consolidation and falling capacity.HotelHotel suppliers will be in a better negotiating position than they have been for some time in 2015, due in part to stronger demand and investor interest, and favorable capital costs. This improved outlook could lead to greater pressure on negotiated rates for travel managers and buyers, and globally, prices are expected to rise by as much as 2.6 percent.Price growth will be led by Latin America, with an expected 6.3 percent increase in managed rates. Hotel prices in North America and Asia Pacific will see moderate growth, while hotel rates throughout EMEA will grow more slowly than the global average throughout 2015.Ground In contrast to the air and hotel sectors, the ground transportation industry has an abundance of supply. With industry consolidation and strong competition, global prices are expected to remain flat throughout 2015.The trend will be similar across all regions, except Latin America, where moderate price growth of 2 percent is expected in 2015, based on generally high travel demand throughout the region.Meetings & EventsCompliance will remain a concern for the meetings & events sector next year, regardless of industry or geography. While there are some exceptions by country, there are several trends expected across the industry in 2015, including a rise in the use of social technology. It is expected that there will be more domestic meetings and shorter booking lead times across the globe in 2015. Mid-price hotels offering core meetings & events services will be most popular. To view the report in full, please visit http://www3.gbta.org/l/5572/2014-08-06/x3kvm. CWT will be releasing 2015 price forecasts for the meetings & events and energy, resources & marine industries later this year.Notes to editorsThe forecast methodology can be found in Appendix 1 (page 23) of the 2015 Global Travel Price Outlook.

Latest CWT Research Shows Mobile Booking Set to Represent 25 Percent of all Online Corporate Bookings by 2017

Carlson Wagonlit Travel (CWT) today releasedTap into mobile: managed travel in the digital economy, an investigation into the impact of mobile in the managed travel space. The free-to-download study suggests that mobile bookings are set to climb steeply over the next decade and will influence not only the entire traveler experience but will shift how travel managers control their travel programs, using the latest mobile technology to help support and connect to their travelers. Both travelers and travel managers expect mobile booking to increase significantly, reaching 25 percent of online transactions by 2017.In addition, CWT's research predicts that mobile bookings will more than double in the next two years.CWT research also shows that it took up to eight years for online booking tools to reach the same level of activity that mobile is expected to achieve in the next three years. The study highlights the high expectations that both travelers and travel managers have for mobile travel services and their awareness of the advantages and benefits it will bring.Supporting the idea that traveler experience is key, the study highlights that neither travelers nor travel managers expect mobile to significantly drive down travel costs; instead ease of doing business, productivity and traveler wellbeing all rank higher as key benefits of mobile. As a result, managed travel apps are becoming more sophisticated, and companies who act now will reap the most benefit, as they steer travelers towards the apps that support the travel program. The study also highlighted that an estimated average of 62 percent of travelers already carry company smartphones and 56 percent of companies surveyed already, or plan to, have a 'Bring your own device' policy. Globally, travel managers also consider the potential impact of mobile on the travel program to be high, rating it 6.8 overall on a scale of 1 to 10.David Moran, CWT executive vice president, Global Marketing & Enterprise Strategy, said, \"We have been planning for this shift for some time and are getting ready to launch new mobile services, such as mobile booking through CWT To Go later this year. While 80 percent of travelers and travel managers told us they want a one-stop-shop app so they don't have to juggle between best-of- breed consumer apps, there isn't an app on the market today that answers all their needs, and that's what we're excited about building on CWT To Go to create the corporate travel app that appeals to both travel managers and travelers.\"Looking to the Asia Pacific region, CWT's research shows:

Chain vs. boutique hotels for business travelers | seattletimes.com

When I'm traveling on business, as I have been the past two weeks, I require the following in a hotel: a comfortable bed, a bathroom, reliable Wi-Fi, adequate space to work and a good location. And there have been times when reliable Wi-Fi was at the top of that list. The Marriott Courtyard Iberville on the edge of New Orleans' French Quarter, where I stayed for 13 nights, fit those requirements. I had a small suite with a couch and a desk, and I was as comfortable as anyone could reasonably expect to be when living in a big, busy hotel for two weeks. My room rate was about $200 a night.

Segmenting Millennial Travelers Business vs. Leisure | By Teresa Y. Lee

In the past year, a lot has been said and happened in regards to Millennials and the hospitality industry. For example, there was exciting news from Marriott and Commune Hotels with the announcement of new brands geared towards Millennials, Moxy and Tommie, respectively. But due to the intense interest in the next generation of travel, a lot of noise has been added to the conversation as well, with the same repetitive points being made. Millennials are technologically savvy. Obviously. They are social and want a lobby design to reflect that where they can interact with others, but also practice isolated togetherness. Got it. Be on social media and connect with them instead of just pushing promotions. Yes, is this 2009? These are all things that should have been realized and acted upon by now. I summarized all these and the other top ten travel trends for Millennials a year ago. The one thing that has not changed is the huge spending potential from this age group and the need for the industry to capture their business and fit their lifestyle. These sweeping generalizations about millennials are not enough anymore. To truly gain their loyalty and thus, the money in their pockets, hoteliers and others in the travel industry must segment the millennial generation even further: millennial business travelers versus millennial leisure travelers. This article will go through the top two trends and opportunities in each of these segments and give one millennial's (read: my) viewpoint on each of these trends.MILLENNIAL BUSINESS TRAVELERS1. Millennials spend more per business trip than non-millennials.OPPORTUNITY: Companies should be offering more amenities to generate additional revenue that millennials are willing to spend money on.Due to their younger age group and point of their career they are in, it would be expected that millennials account for a lower number of business trips annually. However, there seems to be a geographical divide. BCG reports that millennials currently account for approximately one-third of US business travelers, but is expected to increase to 50% by 2020, while Baby Boomers will drop to 11%. This strong demand from millennials is forecasted for the next fifteen years. Only 28% of American millennials report taking four or more business trip annually compared to 45% of non-millennials. It was also reported that Millennials take more trips related to training, recruiting, and conferences than client site visits or client relations; again, due to the stage of their career millennials are currently in. On the other hand, according to a global study conducted by Expedia and Egencia, millennials worldwide (considered 30 and under) travel 4.7 times annually for business versus 3.6 times for 31-45 year-olds, and 4.2 times for 46-65 year-olds. No matter the debate over the number of trips millennial business travelers are taking, it is clear the huge potential of business this generation currently and will continue to represent in the future.

In the past most had very little information from a brochure, directory, or tourism guide book unless they had visited before. That's why back then we trained front desk and reservations agents to find out of the caller was familiar with the hotel, and then if not, find out the primary purpose of the trip. Then based on a business or leisure reason for traveling, agents were trained to offer-up what we would today call a 30 second commercial or elevator speech.

Having a meeting at a hotel no longer means having to sit in a windowless, overly air-conditioned room and noshing on cold cuts sandwiched between stale bread. Hotels are finally starting to lure leisure travelers back as the economy improves, but they are still struggling to convince businesses that they should send groups of employees off-campus for face-to-face meetings.

The Importance Of Follow Up - A \"No\" Strategy That Can Lead To A \"Yes\" | By Tom Costello

To Sell Experiences Not Just Rooms, Build a 'Hotel Value Pyramid' | By Doug Kennedy

When you listen to reservations sales calls these days it is easy to recognize that most of the conversation is focused exclusively on the room or accommodation. What I hear most often is sales agents who are obtaining the caller's dates, number of people, and number of beds needed. They click enter and then read back the list of room types and rates. Little or no information is offered about the overall experience of being a guest. My regular readers know I refer to this as \"website search support.\"

2013 Business Travel Survey: Constrained Supply Among Factors Strengthening U.S. Hotel Seller's Market | businesstravelnews.com

Travel buyers hoping for relief from rising hotel rates might have a long wait. Employment growth is sluggish, the U.S. federal government is cutting back on spending and the eurozone remains in crisis, but negative economic signs do not appear to be kryptonite for a strengthening hotel industry. Such prognostication has proven wrong before. \"Great in '08\" and \"fine through '09\" were industry mottos just before the economic freefall began in 2008. But now, hotel companies, at least those in the United States, look stronger than they did even in those pre-recession salad days.

However, a new generation is surpassing this segment and will be garnering as much attention: The Millennials. This age group is beginning to outpace the Baby Boomer's 76 million population with their own 79 million, and is projected to attain an even larger population gap at 78 million compared to the Boomers' 58 million by 2030. Though most people are aware that the Millennial generation is tech-savvy and will not travel in the same style as their parents, there has not been significant research concerning the trends and changes this generation will bring to the hospitality industry.

U.S. traveler sentiment rises above pre-recession highAmericans' attitudes towards travel are now more positive than the benchmark score recorded just prior to the Great Recession according to the latest travelhorizons survey of 2,300 active travelers conducted by marketing services firm MMGY Global. This milestone augurs well for the continued growth of the travel industry during the forthcoming summer travel season. The Traveler Sentiment Index (TSI), tracked every calendar quarter since March 2007, is a derivative of six factors that measure Americans' attitudes towards travel and serves as a predictor of travel behavior during the coming six months. While the overall TSI has been declining since last April, February marked the first time the TSI surpassed the benchmark score of 100 established in pre-recession March 2007. All six components of the TSI revealed gains in February 2013, with the overall index increasing 10 points in February 2013 (100.8) compared to October 2012 (90.4). The perceived \"affordability of travel\" powered the score forward, having grown from 102.6 in October 2012 to 114.5 in February 2013. The six TSI factors include interest in travel, time for travel, personal finances available for travel, affordability of travel, quality of travel services and safety of travel.

Americas Regional Outlook 2013 | By Horwath HTLAs the world's largest economy, much of what happens in the United States is felt worldwide. This is why there is great concern both in the US and elsewhere over the expanding size of this country's national debt, which has now topped US$ 16 trillion and is currently expected to climb higher. Given the recent election results, it appears that much of the gridlock experienced in Washington will continue. The looming \"fiscal cliff\", so often discussed these days, does not appear to be going away but rather becoming a reality if Congress does not act before the end of 2012 to avert a potential double-dip recession. Genuine concerns remain on the part of most economists that action needs to be taken quickly to cut the deficit spending and/or increase revenues, or the country could indeed experience a second recession, which may in fact be more severe than the last.

Hotels secure negotiating power amid meetings recovery | travelmarketreport.comBy Harvey Chipkin. The long-awaited meetings industry recovery is finally under way, shifting the negotiating advantage away from planners to hotels, according to a new study from Colliers PKF Hospitality Research. While transient and leisure travel began turning around soon after the recession ended in 2009, hotels did not see group demand recover until 2011, according to Robert Mandelbaum, director of research information services for Colliers PKF Hospitality Research.

Office Space, by the Hour | nytimes.comSeasoned business travelers are used to booking a place to sleep. But a couch in the lobby? Somewhat by default, hotel lobbies, business centers and the open space around meeting areas have long functioned as places to meet, network and get work done, although workers' growing ability to be connected without being tethered to a desk has accelerated the trend.

CEOs Fly Coach? Business Travel Turns Frugal | wsj.comBusiness travel is back to pre-recession levels, but road warriors can expect less legroom than before. Traveling for work used to be somewhat cushygrueling schedules and time away from family may have earned corporate travelers a lie-flat seat on a red-eye flight, a sporty rental car or room service after a day of meetings. But more companies are equating business travel with budget travel, so they're asking employees to forgo some perks and trade down to lesser hotels and are banishing even senior executives to coach.

Five Steps For Hotel Sales Managers That Will Take The Chill Out Of Cold Calling | By Tom Costello

I use to cold call a lot. There were times when I'd make 30 cold calls in one hour. Dialing away until I got someone on the other end to listen to my pitch. Searching for that proverbial needle in a haystack. Back in those days if I didn't sell I didn't eat so the best way to put food on the table was 'dialing for dollars', talking to a warm bodies, and closing sales. I was pretty good at knowing what to say when I had a prospect on the line because I designed scripts for all of the different types of prospects that I could possibly encounter and developed a response for any objection they could throw at me.
